The spirit and passion of members is the hallmark of the great development
enjoyed by the Holdfast Tennis Club since its foundation in 1910, through
to the superb achievements over the past decade. The Club has a strong
base with 243 registered members boasting 13 senior and 30 junior teams.
This makes the Club the largest tennis club in the district, with an optimistic
and vital future.
Many Australian champions have been nurtured through the facilities and
coaching provided at the grass roots level by this club. The Holdfast
Tennis Club defines the term "champions" as not just the people
who win tournaments, although they deserve a special recognition - it
is also all members who contribute to our way of community life.
The Holdfast Tennis Club gives young members a grounding in teamwork,
sportsmanship and healthy competition, all of which contribute to self
esteem as they take up their places in our community. For older members
its a great social environment with quality of life rewards. Winning awards
along the way is also a pretty good bonus.
The Holdfast Tennis Club was instrumental in developing the talent of
many individuals. Identities like Adrian Quist, an Australian Davis Cup
player and more recently our leading GDTA division 1 player Bob Zaric
to select just 2 names. This year Bob won the ultimate acclaim from his
district piers, when he received the Bob Parson's Medal.
One of our past Presidents, Bob Klingberg took up the challenge of securing
the club's future by visiting local schools to speak to children about
the fun and mateship at the club. This series of school visits attracted
many new junior members into the Holdfast Tennis Club. The club went from
having 1 junior girls team in 1993, to six junior teams (3 teams each
of boys and girls) by 1995. In that year Holdfast Tennis Club went on
to a clean sweep of all six junior GDTA premierships.
By 2001 the number of teams, both junior and senior had significantly
increased. Sufficient momentum and funds were generated to send junior
members to compete in Kuala Lumpur. This initiative became a continuing
program for interstate and overseas sporting interaction.
The continued growth of the junior teams provided many benefits to the
club in the way of funding for renovations and government support for
2 new courts. As we know our current juniors, quickly move onto becoming
future years seniors. The Holdfast Tennis Club is very lucky to have so
much new talent generating healthy competition and striving for fun as
well as excellence. At this time many other SA community clubs are struggling
for survival, because they have been unable to attract new members and
in particular families.
Holdfast Tennis Club is seen as a family based community club, with unique
in house professional coaching operation run by Mike and Robyn Kenny,
who have played no small part in growing the junior teams to 16 teams
of boys and 14 teams of girls.
Your committee is targeting sponsorship as a major activity. We want to
improve our Williams Avenue facility and provide the best environment
for senior and junior members and friends to enjoy and feel proud to belong.
Over the next few months this website will be expanded to present the
community and social involvement benefits offered by the club. In addition
to providing information and contact details, the website will encourage
new membership and sponsorship.
